Paediatric First Aid (1 day)


This course focuses on:

Key first aid skills in relation to children and babies. It provides an opportunity to learn the first aid responses to the most common accidents and situations in which paediatrics may be involved. The course includes practical situations and is underpinned by relevant theory.

Who should attend? 
Those wanting a basic understanding of paediatric first aid and who have some responsibility for children and babies.

Course outline: 

The differences between children and adults 
Provides a brief summary of the anatomy of the infant and child. And how to communicate with infants, children and adolescents.

Basic life Support 
Participants will be taught how to open the airway, give effective rescue breaths and perform chest compressions for a paediatric casualty. All students will be given the opportunity to practise their skills on a resuscitation manikin.

Unconscious casualty 
Reasons for unconsciousness in a paediatric and examination of an unconscious casualty, including placing an unconscious child in the recovery position.

Choking 
Participants will learn how to deal with choking for a paediatric casualty.

Control of Bleeding 
Participants will be taught how to recognise significant blood loss and how to manage a wound and bleeding.

Respond to the needs of paediatric casualties with major illnesses and injuries:
• Asthma, croup and epiglottis 
• Anaphylaxis
• Burns and scalds
• Meningitis
• Poisons
• Fractures

Duration: Approximately 6 hours

Assessment and certification: 

This course is continually assessed. Students receive a certificate of attendance that is valid for 3 years.
