This course focuses on the safe manual handling of inanimate objects and 24hr back care. The course includes practical situations and is underpinned by relevant theory.

Who should attend? 
Those wanting a basic understanding of manual handling in the workplace and outside of work and who handle objects on a daily basis or who regularly work at a desk or workstation.

Those taking part in the course must be capable of safely lifting an object from the floor to achieve a certificate of competence.

Course outline (modules A & B of the All Wales Passport Scheme) : 

Module A
• Manual handling injuries
• Avoiding musculo-skeletal injuries
• Legislation
• Ergonomics and Risk Assessment
• Principles of safer handling
• Team handling
• Communication

Module B
Inanimate load (object) handling - Demonstrates how to safely lift an object (box) from the floor, using the principles of safe lifting.

Duration: Approximately 4 hours

Assessment and certification: 

This course contains a practical lifting assessment (lifting a small box from the floor). Students receive a certificate of competency that is valid for 3 years.
