This course focuses on the safe moving and handling of people. The course includes a variety of practical situations and is underpinned by relevant theory. Group discussion is very much encouraged throughout the course.
Who should attend?
Those wanting an understanding of manual handling in the workplace and outside of work and who move and handle people on a regular basis.
Those taking part in the course must be capable of safely lifting an object from the floor and moving people from one place to another i.e. bed to chair, to achieve a certificate of competence.

Module A
• Manual handling injuries
• Avoiding musculo-skeletal injuries
• Legislation
• Ergonomics and Risk Assessment
• Principles of safer handling
• Team handling
• Communication
Module B
Inanimate load (object) handling - Demonstrates how to safely lifting an object (box) from the floor, using the principles of safe lifting.
People handling
Module C - Sitting, Standing and Walking
Module D - Bed Mobility
Module E - Lateral Transfers
Module F - Hoisting
Duration: Approximately 14 hours
Assessment and certification:
This course is continually assessed. Students receive a certificate of attendance that is valid for 1 year.
